So one of the biggest problems for me in the hospital with my recent appendix bursting extravaganza is that I am allergic to penicillin. So that ruled out a whole category of drugs that could help me and stop any infection that could be floating in my body. My surgeon brought in a House-type infectious disease doctor who broke down all the different types of penicillin to find one that just may work on me. Sure, it was a gamble, but I had no choice. I was at the “hail mary” point of antibiotics, so we tried Cefuroxime, which is typically used to treat Lyme disease, so it is pretty strong. Go big or go home right?
Well, it worked just fine and dandy, no real reactions, except for the most recent one. I took my last dose 2 days ago and ever since then I have had a constant wheeze, more than usual. It can’t be allergies, those are under control from 4 Loratadines a day (yes, 4). Am I going through serious antibiotic withdrawal? I was on about 10 different antibiotics, for 5 days straight, a new one every 3 hours through my IV and now I come home with super strong antibiotics with no taper, just stopping them cold and I think my body is freaking out.
Why are my lungs extra wheezy lately? Anyone?
